3 reasons to bring lunch to work

It’s no surprise that meal prepping and bringing your own lunch to work saves money. In my opinion, there’s so many benefits to packing your own lunch every day for both you and the environment, and I’m here to share a few of those with you.

Before jumping into these benefits, I want to share a few things that will help you stick to packing your own lunch. First, purchase a lunchbox or use a bag that allows you to bring everything you need. I have this lunch box that has been perfect for bringing two meals and snacks for the day. I still have to bring a few extra things here and there, but for the most part this lunch box does it for me. You can also use a reusable bag if you don’t already own a lunch box.

It’s also extremely helpful to plan your meals in advance and do a bit meal prepping. You can do a full week of meal prep or plan to bring your dinner leftovers the next day. Any plan that fits your lifestyle will help set you up for success.

Finally, pack your bag the night before. Even if it’s just putting the food into the containers and having them ready to throw into your lunch box. You’re going to more apt to remembering your lunch if it’s already packed and ready to go.

save money

The most obvious positive from bringing your own lunch to work is saving some dough! It’s crazy to me watching the same people walk down to the deli every day to buy a lunch. Spending $10 or more for one meal. Five lunches per week – $50. That’s more money that I spend on groceries most weeks.

Before you go to the grocery store, plan out the meals you want to make for the week, make a grocery list (and buy only those things), and make your meals.

reduce waste

If you grab lunch from the deli or a cafe, you’re likely throwing out single-use containers, though some containers are switching to compostable. There’s also the plastic wear that gets thrown out when you grab a quick bite. Instead, when you bring your own lunch to work you can bring reusable containers that will get used over and over again.

As I shared in my simple sustainable swaps post, I would also recommend bringing your own silverware to work for your desk if your office is like mine and only offers plastic wear. While you’re at it, grab a reusable coffee tumbler on your way out the house for your morning coffee run.

stay healthy

By bringing your own lunch to work you can control exactly what and how much you’re bringing. For me, this means being able to weigh all my food and portion it out for the day. For someone that may have food intolerances and/or allergies, bringing your own food ensures you’ll feel your best during the day.
